Our man in Cape Town, Giles Knights (peddler of all things healthy) helps us plan much of this trip by tracking swells on the AfricanSurfer Surf Report. Between the swells which he predicts, we often have some time to kill…
For example, the waves were mediocre in Limbe last weekend but we could see the potential of the place – and it has one of the few right point breaks in West Africa – so when the models showed a push for this coming weekend we decided to head down the coast to Kribi, a cruisy resort town a few hours south of Douala, till the swell arrived.
Kribi is not renounced as a surf spot among the Cameroonian surfing population (nine, at last count). But we were told to look out for a local surfer by the name of Peggy. Lo-and-behold, when we stepped out of our truck at this little beach hotel, the first man we met was the diminutive Peggy:
He is possibly the most stoked surfer we’d ever met and we had a good couple of days surfing the little beachbreak in front of the campsite with him:
Stone gives Peggy’s 5’0 nose-less, de-laminated board a burn while Peggy enjoys a go on his Al Merrick.
More about Peggy in the next day or two…
We also met a couple of crazy Danes who we ended up going out on the town (village?) with. They also invited us to an awesome prawn & crayfish lunch on a nearby beach which was cooked, as Klaus – son of Svend – memorably put it, with “three knives and a rock”. Remarkable…
In Kribi the main form of taxi is the Chinese motorcycle (usually a Nangfang, Sanli, Dragon, or the brilliantly-named Wonda) that shoots up and down along the beach. These are not big motorcycles, but the drivers are more than happy to squeeze up a bit to fit a few more ous on:
We drove like this to town one night at great pace. It was intimate and terrifying – all at once.
Its been a great week with Peggy and The Danes in Kribi, but now we’re off to Limbe for another weekend with the French crew.

Glad you scored some waves in Kribi (that’s the best I’ve ever seen it) and met the famous Peggy. Looks like the waves will be good in Limbe this weekend but you’re probably concentrating more on how to leave Cameroon.
It was great meeting you guys. I’ll keep checking the website. I’ll let you the names of some guys down in Newquay once you get a bit closer. Cheers, Ross.
